Michael Schwartz

Chef/Owner of Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink
With the launch of his eponymous restaurant, Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink in 2007, Michael Schwartz (46) defined the Design District as Miami’s hot new dining destination, raising his profile from well-respected local chef to a nationally renowned culinary innovator at the forefront of the farm-to-table movement. Recently honored with the prestigious 2010 James Beard Foundation Award for Best Chef: South, Schwartz’s first cookbook, Michael’s Genuine Food: Down to Earth Cooking for People Who Love to Eat, published by Clarkson Potter was released in February 2011 to general acclaim for its delicious, easy to replicate recipes. He is recognized and lauded by his peers and the diners that flock to his restaurant for his straightforward, ingredient-driven cuisine, as well as his commitment to supporting local farmers and responsible, seasonal food sourcing.

Schwartz is a founding partner of the Roots in the City Farmers Market, Miami's only local-producer-exclusive farmers market, where he helps people on food assistance gain access to fresh and healthy foods through a partnership with friend and chef Michel Nischan’s Wholesome Wave Foundation. Building on this project, which began in spring 2010, Schwartz is currently working with Overtown’s Phillis Wheatley Elementary School as part of the White House’s Chefs Move to Schools initiative, to replant its edible school garden and help teach kids, parents, and cafeteria cooks where healthy, tasty food comes from and how easy it is to prepare meals from fresh ingredients. He is a sought-after television personality/culinary guest, having appeared nationally on programs including MARTHA: The Martha Stewart Show, Rachael Ray’s Rachael’s Vacation, Throwdown with Bobby Flay, After Hours With Daniel Boulud, Top Chef, and Fresh Food Fast with Emeril Lagasse; and has been featured in outlets like New York Times, Food & Wine, and Condé Nast Traveler. In summer 2010, the chef opened his second restaurant, bringing his brand to the Caribbean with Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink Grand Cayman. Working with local fishermen and farmers, he has already begun to shine a spotlight on the rich culinary resources of the locale, just as he has done in South Florida.
